From dmv-mailman@burningman.com Wed Jul 7 11:13:26 2004 Date: Thu, 01 Jul 2004 22:25:56 -0700 From: dmv-mailman@burningman.com To: rich@testingrange.com Subject: DMV Application Received: Endless Tracks ========================================= Hello! This is an automated email from the DMV's new (fancy!) technology program. Please take a moment to carefully read over the information below: If you are receiving this email, it means that your application was considered complete by the program i.e., you provided us with all of the requested information and agreed to certain terms and conditions. IF YOU DID NOT INCLUDE A URL OR UPLOAD A PHOTO: Please note that your application is NOT complete, and will not be considered until we receive this. Please mail a photo or diagram of your vehicle to: Burning Man Attn: Department of Mutant Vehicles 1900 3rd Street 2nd Floor San Francisco, CA 94158-2502 EVERYONE: The next step in the Mutant Vehicle licensing process is for your pre-registration data to be reviewed by the DMV. You can expect ONE of the following three things to happen: 1. You will receive an email inviting you to bring your Mutant Vehicle to Burning Man, where a team of DMV Hotties will perform an on-playa inspection. If it meets all criteria, it will be issued an appropriate license. In this instance, you will also be added to an announce list for 2004 Mutant Vehicles, which will provide you with important information before the event. OR 2. You will receive an email asking you to NOT bring your Mutant Vehicle to Burning Man. If you receive this email, it is because a team of DMV Hotties has determined that this vehicle would not be issued a license on the playa. This step is intended to reduce the sweat and heartache of hauling your vehicle all the way to the playa only to discover that you cannot share it with your community. OR 3. You will be contacted by a member of the DMV and asked to clarify certain points about your application or vehicle. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us at dmv@burningman.com. And if you haven't heard from us by August 1, 2004, please do contact us (we're working with a new process and want to make sure no one falls through the cracks). That's all for now! Thanks! The needle can be controlled, via computers, to point to wherever a person desires to go. Also, it will capture the fairy traces, the breadcrumb trails, left by passing through the playa, in the form of GPS track logs that will then be displayed for people to see...also see the next question This last April the cart was the base for the 'Shasta Daisy Queen' float at the sebastopol Apple Blossom festival. http://www.testingrange.com/pix/contact.cgi/CP_04242004 I do not plan that type of work for burning man because it was too visually restricting, but that does show that we have the ability to radically alter the basic structure. Right now it doesn't look much like a golf cart: http://www.testingrange.com/pix/CP_12132003/HTML/DSCN0030.html And it won't look much like a golf cart, aside from the basic footprint, 4 wheels, seat, steering wheel...and 5 foot compass needle lit up with lots of light. Mutant Vehicle Intent: Endless Tracks will reach out to people to bring their GPS devices and we will load their track logs into our computers and then display animations of those trips. These animations will also include (at the person's desire) the animations of other people's tracks. See my page of experiments in SVG and Flash track log animations: http://www.testingrange.com/geotest/svg.html Specifically, see this one: http://www.testingrange.com/geotest/tksepoct2000.svg Each of the little black ellipses represents one 'trip' that I or a member of my family took with the GPS unit. So there is a trip to sacremento, and several down the peninsula, and off to the coast to go diving. All of these represent a story, a dynamic story of place, and of travel. So in order to tell these sorts of dynamic stories I wrote code to animate track logs. And the cool thing to me is that people will be able to belly up to the golf cart, and plop their gps's onto the chart table (I think this will be the only vehicle around with a chart table) and load their track logs. Street Legal: no Vehicle License Number: State of License: Vehicle Length: 8' Vehicle Width: 4' Vehicle Weight: 800+/- Frame Base: Club Car Golf Cart Frame Year: 78? Capacity: 4 Number of Trailers: None Levels: yes Number of Levels: 1 1/2 levels. There will (probably) be a sort of mezzanine area where the rear passengers will sit at about the head level of the front passengers Sound Sytem: yes Sound System Wattage: low Bar: no Standing Passengers: no Design Safety: I'm making no modifications that project or protrude outside of the normal 'space' of the golf cart. I'm putting in a secondary master kill switch. In reality, for the most part, I'm starting with an older, but stock, golf cart, which is a reasonably safe vehicle, and I'm not adding anything to it to make it less safe (ie. no pointy jagged bits...no great heights, etc). I have an EE friend who is very experienced in safety issues who is also reviewing my electrical work for the computer and drive systems to make sure everything is copacetic. Operating Procedures: I know I should have an extensive list here, but basically, I'm not changing the physical parameters of the basic golf cart in ways that make it more dangerous. I'm working on procedures to keep the vehicle running smoothly, but the major safety issue is to disable both the primary and secondary engine locks when stopped with people around the vehicle. Enter/Exit Procedures: The driver enters on the left, the front seat passenger on the right. The rear passenger/s enter from the rear. It is open and low. Lighting Plans: I have a honda generator on the cart, so I will have power for lights...also, the fuel for the generator is the 'hazardous combustible' I mention in the final question. no fire effects, etc, planned. I'm planning two bright headlights in the front, bright tail lights, and most importantly, for the compass needle on the top to be very bright. But less then 20 gallons, and we will store it safely in camp. =========================================
